10 golden rules to follow when designing a kitchen

Renovating the kitchen is an expensive project, hence it is important that it is well-planned and highly functional. Although every kitchen is customized according to each homeowner's individual requirements, here are some golden rules to follow to ensure a kitchen where beauty and functionality coexist. Whether you’re planning a total kitchen remodel or are building your dream kitchen from scratch, follow these handy rules for kitchen design.

1. Identify How the Space Will be Used

When designing the kitchen, one must decide how the family intends to use the space and plan the layout accordingly. Opt for a closed kitchen or an open kitchen that allows interaction with family and guests. The different kitchen layouts include a one-wall kitchen, an L-shaped kitchen, U-shaped kitchen, island kitchen, and a galley kitchen.

2. Plan the Zoning

Demarcate the kitchen into distinct zones for different functions like food preparation, cooking storage, etc. The wet zone should include the sink and the dishwasher. Use the cabinets for utensil storage and integrate a pantry to store cooking supplies and consumables. This is a great way to create an organised and clutter-free kitchen.

3. Incorporate the Work Triangle

The work triangle connects three important work areas of the kitchen: the cooktop, sink, and refrigerator. This area should be unobstructed and the distance between each zone should range from 4 feet to 9 feet so that one can efficiently move between tasks such as cooking, cleaning and food preparation.
